Physician Specialists

Regular and proper physician care is a key factor in managing diabetes. People with diabetes should see their family doctor on a routine basis and talk to him or her about whether they may need one or more of the following types of specialty physicians involved in their care.

Endocrinologists
Doctors who work with patients on a variety of diabetes needs including blood sugar control, insulin needs, medication needs, and screenings to monitor for other possible diabetes related problems.

Nephrologists
Doctors who work with patients who are suffering with some kidney or urination problems. People with diabetes are much more likely to suffer from kidney problems and should have their kidney function checked by their family doctor. Family doctors refer patients to nephrologists when needed.

Podiatrists
Doctors who care for the health and wellbeing of your feet. Because many people with diabetes suffer from circulation problems, their feet should be checked regularly. A person with foot problems may need to visit a podiatrist.
